Driveways across Stockton, Norton, Eaglescliffe and Yarm

Stockton is a regular run for us from Fishburn, close enough that a site visit is usually a matter of days and we can be back easily if you ever need us under the guarantee. We work right across the borough, the town itself, Norton, Hartburn, Fairfield, Thornaby, Eaglescliffe, Ingleby Barwick and Yarm, and the jobs vary enormously between them.

In the older parts of Stockton and Norton the work is often about getting more out of the same footprint: a terraced or semi frontage that currently takes one car awkwardly, turned into a properly set out drive that takes two without the house losing its front garden entirely. Parking pressure is the driver behind most enquiries here.

Out at Eaglescliffe, Hartburn and Yarm the brief usually shifts towards appearance as well as capacity. Larger detached properties want a surface that looks deliberate, borders, contrasting blocks, a defined threshold, and often a patio or landscaping element carried out at the same time. On the newer estates at Ingleby Barwick and Fairfield, the common job is replacing a builder-standard drive that has sunk in the wheel tracks after a few winters.

Whichever part of the borough you are in, one factor dominates on Teesside: the ground is flat and water does not move on its own. Falls, gullies and permeable options are worked out before anything is laid.

We are based in Fishburn and work right across County Durham, Teesside, Tyne & Wear and North Yorkshire. Have a look at recent projects or read how we work.

Why Stockton homeowners use JP Driveways & Landscaping

A short run from base

Fishburn to Stockton is a quick trip, so we can normally arrange a visit to measure up without a long wait and we stay easy to reach for the full 5 year guarantee period.

20 years on Teesside ground

Two decades of laying drives here means we design for flat ground and slow drainage as standard, because that is what causes most of the failures we are called to replace.

Everything in one written price

Excavation, sub-base, edgings, drainage and finish, all set out in a free written quote after an actual site visit, not a per-square-metre guess over the phone.

Insured and guaranteed

£5 million public liability insurance and a 5 year workmanship guarantee on every Stockton job, from a family-run team where the owner is on site.

Local conditions

The problems we see on Stockton driveways

Flat ground, nowhere for water to go

Much of Stockton and Thornaby is very level. Without designed falls, channel drains or a permeable surface, rainwater simply sits: puddling on the drive, softening the base beneath it and eventually working towards the house.

Heavy clay subsoil

Clay holds water and moves with the seasons. Paving laid on a thin base over clay lifts, dips and opens at the joints. We excavate deeper here and use membrane where the subgrade needs separating from the stone.

Estate drives never built for two cars

Original driveways on Ingleby Barwick and Fairfield were built to a developer's budget. Once two family cars use them daily, the wheel tracks sink and the edges spread, because the sub-base was never deep enough.

Exposed, open-plan frontages

Wind-driven rain across open Teesside estates finds any unrestrained edge and any poorly bedded fence post. Edge haunching and properly concreted posts matter more here than most homeowners expect.

Our process

How a Stockton job runs, from enquiry to guarantee

  1. 01

    Your call or enquiry

Tell us what you are planning and where you are in Stockton. We talk it through, ask about access, parking and drainage, and arrange a time to come and look that suits you, including evenings up to 6pm and Saturdays.

  2. 02

    Site visit and measure up

We come out to your Stockton property, measure the area properly, check ground conditions and levels, and look at where surface water needs to go. Nothing is quoted from an aerial photograph.

  3. 03

    Clear written quote

You get a free written price setting out the surface, the build-up beneath it, edgings, drainage and the finish. No obligation, no pressure and no returning later with extras that should have been priced at the start.

  4. 04

Date booked with a 20% deposit

A 20% deposit secures your installation date. Payment terms for the balance are confirmed in your written quote. Card, cash and bank transfer are all fine.

  5. 05

    Installation, tidily run

A typical driveway takes around 4 days on site. We keep the working area contained, protect what stays, and leave your Stockton street and frontage clean at the end of every day.

  6. 06

Walk round and 5 year guarantee

We walk the finished job with you before we leave, explain aftercare, and hand over work covered by our 5 year workmanship guarantee, backed by £5 million public liability insurance.

Drainage first: why Stockton driveways need it designed in

On flatter ground the drainage strategy has to come before the aesthetics. When we measure up in Stockton we look at where the ground currently sheds water, where it collects after heavy rain, whether there is an existing gully we can legitimately fall towards, and how close the finished level will sit to the house and garage thresholds. Only then do we decide between designed falls to a channel drain, a permeable build-up, or a combination of the two.

Permeable options, resin bound over a suitable open-graded base, or block paving with permeable jointing, earn their place here because they take water down through the surface rather than pushing it somewhere else. Where a solid surface makes more sense, a linear channel drain across the head of the drive, correctly connected, does the same job. What we will not do is lay a flat, sealed surface with no plan for water and leave you to discover the problem in the first heavy winter.

How we build a Stockton driveway, and what a written quote covers

The build sequence is the same on every job, and it is where the value sits. We excavate to the depth the ground demands and cart the spoil away, lay geotextile membrane over soft or clay subgrade, then build the stone sub-base up in compacted layers rather than tipping it in one go. Edges and kerbs are bedded and haunched in concrete, because an unrestrained edge is where block paving spreads and tarmac crumbles first.

The surface then goes on to the correct falls: blocks laid, cut and vibrated with a kiln-dried sand joint; resin bound trowelled to a consistent depth; tarmac laid in a base and wearing course and machine rolled while workable; or pattern concrete poured, imprinted and sealed. A typical driveway is around 4 days on site from first dig to final clean down, and we keep the frontage and the street tidy at the end of each day.

Your quote is free, given in writing after we have actually stood on the site, and it sets out the build-up, the drainage and the finish so you can compare it honestly with anyone else's. A 20% deposit books the date, and payment terms for the balance are confirmed in your written quote. Everything is covered by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.
