Covering Richmond and the surrounding Dales villages
Richmond sits at the southern end of our regular patch, and North Yorkshire has been part of our working area for years; we have taken jobs from York up to Newcastle, so a run down to Richmond, Catterick, Brompton-on-Swale, Hudswell or the villages along the Swale is entirely routine for us.
The town's character shapes the work more here than almost anywhere we operate. Richmond has a substantial number of period and stone-built properties, many of them within or adjoining conservation areas, and restraint in material choice is essential. Stabilised gravel, tumbled block paving and natural stone paving all suit the town. Glossy, brightly coloured or heavily patterned surfaces almost always look wrong against Georgian stone and older brickwork, however well laid.
The topography matters too. Richmond and the surrounding Dales villages are full of sloping plots, stepped approaches and long rural driveways falling away towards the river. Retaining, steps and cross-falls are the difference between a drive that works for twenty years and one that scours out or floods at the bottom, so we plan all of that at survey stage and put it in the written quote rather than adding it later.
Rural properties around Richmond also see heavier traffic than a typical suburban drive, oil deliveries, agricultural vehicles, horse boxes, which affects the depth and specification of the build-up beneath the surface.
We are based in Fishburn and work right across County Durham, Teesside, Tyne & Wear and North Yorkshire. Have a look at recent projects or read how we work.

Why Richmond homeowners use JP Driveways & Landscaping
North Yorkshire is a regular working area
We have worked throughout the county for years, from Richmond down towards York, so the town is well within the patch we cover rather than a one-off trip.
20 years' experience on period property
Two decades of work means we understand how to set finished levels against old walls with low damp courses, and which materials weather in rather than stand out.
Slopes and retaining priced up front
Steps, cross-falls and retaining walls are worked out at survey and included in the written quote, not raised as an extra once the dig has started.
Insured and guaranteed
£5 million public liability insurance and a 5 year workmanship guarantee on every job, from a small family-run team led by Jack Pike.
Local conditions
The problems we see on Richmond driveways
Steep and stepped plots
Richmond's topography means many drives fall sharply. Without designed cross-falls, steps or a retaining wall, gravel washes down, surfaces scour and water gathers at the lowest point.
Conservation area and period constraints
The wrong surface on a stone frontage undermines the whole property, and in some settings choices are genuinely restricted. Material selection here is part of the job, not an afterthought.
Old walls and low damp courses
Period buildings often have little or no damp protection. Paving built up too high, or falling towards the wall, drives moisture straight into the stone.
Heavier rural traffic and soft verges
Deliveries, tractors and horse boxes load a drive far more than a car, while soft verges let an unrestrained edge spread within a season or two.

Gravel and stone that stay put on a sloping Richmond drive
Gravel is the natural choice for many Richmond and Dales properties: free-draining, sympathetic, inexpensive to cover a large area and easy to top up. The reason it gets a poor reputation is that it is so often simply tipped onto soil or old hardcore, where it migrates into ruts, washes down slopes and ends up on the lawn and the road.
Done properly it behaves entirely differently. We excavate to a sensible depth, lay geotextile membrane to stop the subgrade pumping up into the stone, then build and compact a sub-base. Stabilising or cellular grids are laid and filled so the gravel locks in place rather than moving under wheels, which is what makes it viable on a sloping approach at all. Edges are restrained deliberately, and where the drive meets the highway or a threshold we normally recommend a paved or blocked apron so stone is not dragged out onto the road.
Where natural stone or tumbled blocks are the better fit, the same principles apply beneath: correct excavation depth, compacted layers, and edges bedded and haunched in concrete rather than sand.
Levels, retaining and drainage on Dales properties
On a falling site, the survey is mostly about levels and water. We establish where the drive has to meet the road, the house threshold and any garage, work out whether the change is best absorbed by a continuous cross-fall, a stepped section or a low retaining wall, and identify where water currently runs after heavy rain. Long rural approaches need water shed continuously along their length rather than allowed to collect at the bottom, so cross-falls and, where appropriate, a channel or soakaway are designed in.
Where a drive passes close to an older building we set the finished level below the damp course and fall water positively away from the walls. Retaining structures, steps and any drainage runs are all detailed and priced in the written quote, because these are precisely the items that unscrupulous quotes leave out and add later.
Your quote is free, given in writing after an actual site visit, and it sets out the build-up, edgings, drainage and finish so you can compare it fairly. A 20% deposit books your date, and payment terms for the balance are confirmed in your written quote. A typical driveway is around 4 days on site, we leave the site clean each day, and we walk the finished job with you before handing over work covered by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.
