Getting driveway materials right for Durham's older properties
Material choice carries more weight in Durham than in most places we work, because so much of the housing is stone or aged brick, and some of it sits in or near conservation areas. Tumbled block paving, riven natural stone and stabilised gravel all sit comfortably against weathered stone, while bright, sharply moulded blocks and heavily coloured patterns tend to fight with it. We would rather advise you towards the material that suits the building than the one that is quickest for us to lay.
On newer Durham housing the calculation flips. Slopes, retaining and drainage on Durham driveways
A sloping plot is not a problem, but it is a design job. We survey the fall across the whole area, decide where the drive needs stepping or terracing, and work out whether a small retaining wall or sleeper bed earns its place.
