Newcastle is the northern end of our regular working area

We are up in Newcastle frequently. From Fishburn it is a straightforward run north, and Tyne & Wear has been part of our patch for years alongside Durham and Sunderland; we have taken work from York up to Newcastle and across to Penrith, so the city is comfortably within our normal reach for both quoting and returning under guarantee.

Newcastle housing ranges from dense Tyneside flats and terraces in Heaton, Jesmond, Byker and Walker through to substantial suburban properties in Gosforth, Fenham, Kenton and out towards Ponteland and Wideopen. The two ends of that range demand almost opposite approaches.

In the inner city, the job is dominated by constraints rather than choices: how a wagon gets in, where spoil goes, whether a dropped kerb exists or is needed, and exactly how surface water is dealt with when the frontage is only a few metres deep and the pavement is immediately beyond it. Setting out and drainage detail are the whole job, and material choice is secondary.

Further out, the brief becomes parking two or three cars without turning the entire front garden into hard surface. That is where borders, contrasting blocks, a defined threshold and a retained planted strip earn their keep, and where resin bound has become genuinely popular for its clean, seamless finish on modest suburban frontages.

We are based in Fishburn and work right across County Durham, Teesside, Tyne & Wear and North Yorkshire. Have a look at recent projects or read how we work.

Properties we work on in Newcastle

  • Tyneside flats and terraces in Heaton, Byker, Walker and Benwell with shallow frontages
  • Larger period properties in Jesmond and Gosforth needing a considered, sympathetic finish
  • Inter-war semis in Fenham, Kenton and Denton wanting off-street parking
  • Modern estate housing to the north and west with sunken builder-standard drives
  • Rear yards, back lanes and courtyards needing a hard, well-drained surface

What Newcastle homeowners ask for most

  • Creating off-street parking on a shallow city frontage
  • Resin bound over sound existing concrete or a new permeable base
  • Drainage that keeps water off the house and out of the highway
  • Replacing cracked concrete, broken flags and failed tarmac frontages
  • Rear yard paving, fencing, gates and artificial grass in tight city gardens

Why homeowners choose us

Why Newcastle homeowners use JP Driveways & Landscaping

Regularly working in Tyne & Wear

Newcastle sits at the northern end of the area we cover week to week, alongside Sunderland and Durham, so we are not a firm making a one-off trip.

20 years on tight and awkward sites

Two decades of experience means we plan access, plant size, spoil removal and drainage before quoting rather than discovering problems on day one.

Honest advice between surfaces

We will talk you through block paving and resin bound properly, what each one costs you in maintenance, how each behaves on your frontage, rather than pushing one option.

Insured and guaranteed for 5 years

£5 million public liability insurance and a 5 year workmanship guarantee on every Newcastle job, with the owner on site.

Local conditions

The problems we see on Newcastle driveways

Restricted access and no room to work

City frontages leave nowhere to stack materials or park a wagon. Without planning smaller plant, barrow runs and grab collections, jobs overrun and neighbours suffer, so we plan it at quote stage.

Drainage with nowhere obvious to go

On a shallow frontage the drive often sits between the house and the public footway. Water must not be discharged to the highway, so permeable surfaces and channel drains connected correctly are usually the only proper answer.

Older brickwork and damp levels

Newcastle's Victorian and Edwardian housing frequently has a low damp course. A drive built up too high traps moisture against the brick, so finished levels and falls have to be set with that in mind.

Exposure, frost and city grime

Wind-driven rain, winter frost and traffic grime are hard on unrestrained edges and poorly jointed paving. Haunched edges and correctly sanded joints are what keep a city drive tight over years.

Our process

How a Newcastle job runs, from enquiry to guarantee

  1. 01

    Your call or enquiry

Tell us what you are planning and where you are in Newcastle. We talk it through, ask about access, parking and drainage, and arrange a time to come and look that suits you, including evenings up to 6pm and Saturdays.

  2. 02

    Site visit and measure up

We come out to your Newcastle property, measure the area properly, check ground conditions and levels, and look at where surface water needs to go. Nothing is quoted from an aerial photograph.

  3. 03

    Clear written quote

You get a free written price setting out the surface, the build-up beneath it, edgings, drainage and the finish. No obligation, no pressure and no returning later with extras that should have been priced at the start.

  4. 04

Date booked with a 20% deposit

A 20% deposit secures your installation date. Payment terms for the balance are confirmed in your written quote. Card, cash and bank transfer are all fine.

  5. 05

    Installation, tidily run

A typical driveway takes around 4 days on site. We keep the working area contained, protect what stays, and leave your Newcastle street and frontage clean at the end of every day.

  6. 06

Walk round and 5 year guarantee

We walk the finished job with you before we leave, explain aftercare, and hand over work covered by our 5 year workmanship guarantee, backed by £5 million public liability insurance.

Resin bound or block paving for a Newcastle frontage?

This is the question we get asked most in Newcastle, and the honest answer depends on your frontage. Resin bound gives a smooth, seamless, permeable surface with no joints, no loose stone and very little maintenance beyond an occasional wash. It works especially well on smaller frontages, where a jointed surface can look busy, and on properties with modern render and dark frames. It does need a sound, suitable base: either a properly built new permeable construction or existing concrete or tarmac that is genuinely in good condition, which we will assess honestly rather than simply covering over.

Block paving remains the workhorse. It handles heavy, repeated use, can be cut around bay windows, manholes and awkward boundaries, and, crucially in a city, can be lifted and relaid if a utility ever needs to dig. If a single area is ever damaged, it is repaired without a visible patch. Where you want to define parking bays, borders or a threshold, blocks let us do that deliberately with contrasting colours and courses.

Working in the city: access, spoil and getting it right first time

Half of the skill on a Newcastle job is logistical. Before we quote we work out how a wagon or grab lorry can get to the property, where a mini digger can be positioned or whether the dig has to be done by hand, how much spoil is coming out, and where materials can be stored safely without blocking a pavement or a neighbour's access. Getting this planned means a typical driveway still runs to around 4 days on site rather than dragging on.

Drainage takes the same care. We establish where surface water can legitimately go and design for it, a permeable build-up that takes water down through the surface, or falls to a properly connected channel drain, always directing water away from the house wall, garage threshold and any lower neighbouring property. Where a dropped kerb is involved we will tell you what is required before you commit.

Below the surface the specification does not change for city work: excavate to depth, membrane where the ground is soft, sub-base compacted in layers, edges bedded and haunched in concrete. You get a free written quote after an actual visit, a 20% deposit books the date, payment terms for the balance are confirmed in your written quote, and everything is covered by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.
