Covering Northallerton town and the villages around it

Northallerton sits at the far south of our normal patch, and we are there regularly: North Yorkshire has been part of our working area for years, with jobs running from York right up to Newcastle. A run down the A167 or A19 is straightforward, so booking a site visit here is usually a matter of days rather than weeks.

The character of the work changes noticeably compared with Teesside. Northallerton has a high proportion of older, period and rural properties, from the town's brick and stone houses off the High Street to farmhouses, converted barns and village homes in Romanby, Brompton, Thirsk-side villages and out towards Bedale. On buildings like these, gravel, tumbled block paving and natural stone almost always sit better than anything glossy, brightly coloured or heavily patterned.

Rural driveways bring their own set of practical issues. A long approach has to shed water across its length rather than at one point, cope with tractors, delivery wagons and horse boxes rather than just a family car, and hold a firm edge against soft verges that would otherwise let the surface spread. Those are all decisions made at survey stage, not on the day.

We are equally happy on a compact town frontage where the priority is neat setting out, a tidy threshold and drainage that keeps water off the brickwork.

We are based in Fishburn and work right across County Durham, Teesside, Tyne & Wear and North Yorkshire. Have a look at recent projects or read how we work.

Honest material advice

We will tell you what suits your building rather than what is fastest to lay. On period and stone properties that judgement is most of the value.

Local conditions

The problems we see on Northallerton driveways

Long approaches and surface water

A rural drive collects a great deal of water over its length. Without cross-falls, a channel or a permeable surface it scours in the middle and floods at the low end, taking the stone with it.

Soft verges and unrestrained edges

Where a drive meets grass, field edge or hedging with no restraint, the surface spreads sideways and the edge disappears within a couple of seasons. Edging is structural here, not decorative.

Heavier vehicles than the drive was built for

Tractors, oil deliveries, horse boxes and builders' wagons impose far more load than a car. A build-up designed for domestic use alone ruts quickly under that traffic.

Period buildings, ground levels and damp

Older Northallerton properties often have low or non-existent damp courses. Paving laid too high or falling the wrong way traps water against stone and brick, so finished levels have to be set carefully.

Our process

How a Northallerton job runs, from enquiry to guarantee

    Your call or enquiry

Tell us what you are planning and where you are in Northallerton. We talk it through, ask about access, parking and drainage, and arrange a time to come and look that suits you, including evenings up to 6pm and Saturdays.

  2. 02

    Site visit and measure up

We come out to your Northallerton property, measure the area properly, check ground conditions and levels, and look at where surface water needs to go. Nothing is quoted from an aerial photograph.

  3. 03

    Clear written quote

You get a free written price setting out the surface, the build-up beneath it, edgings, drainage and the finish. No obligation, no pressure and no returning later with extras that should have been priced at the start.

  4. 04

Date booked with a 20% deposit

A 20% deposit secures your installation date. Payment terms for the balance are confirmed in your written quote. Card, cash and bank transfer are all fine.

  5. 05

    Installation, tidily run

A typical driveway takes around 4 days on site. We keep the working area contained, protect what stays, and leave your Northallerton street and frontage clean at the end of every day.

  6. 06

Walk round and 5 year guarantee

We walk the finished job with you before we leave, explain aftercare, and hand over work covered by our 5 year workmanship guarantee, backed by £5 million public liability insurance.

Gravel done properly on a Northallerton driveway

Gravel gets a bad reputation, and almost always because it was laid badly: tipped straight onto soil or old hardcore with nothing to hold it. Done properly it is one of the best surfaces for a rural North Yorkshire property: free-draining, inexpensive to cover a large area, easy to top up, and entirely sympathetic to a stone or period building.

Our build-up starts with excavation to a sensible depth, a geotextile membrane to stop the subgrade pumping up into the stone, and a compacted sub-base. Stabilising grids or a cellular grid system are then laid and filled, so the gravel locks in place instead of migrating into ruts and onto the lawn. Edges are restrained deliberately, and where a drive meets the road or a threshold we will usually recommend a paved or blocked apron so stone is not dragged out onto the highway.

Building a rural driveway that copes with real traffic

For farm accesses, barn conversions and long village approaches, the questions we ask at survey are about use rather than looks: what is the heaviest vehicle that comes up here, how often, and where does water currently run? The answers set the excavation depth, the sub-base thickness and whether tarmac, gravel or a hybrid solution makes the most sense along different sections.

Cross-falls are worked out so water is shed continuously along the drive rather than allowed to gather at the bottom. Where a slope is significant we may add a channel or a soakaway, and on approaches that pass close to a building we plan the falls to take water firmly away from the walls. Edges are haunched, and passing or turning areas are built to the same specification as the main run because that is where the greatest turning load is applied.

Everything is set out in a free written quote after a proper site visit, including the depths and materials, so you can compare it fairly. A 20% deposit books the date, and payment terms for the balance are confirmed in your written quote. The finished work carries our 5 year workmanship guarantee and we walk the whole job with you before we leave.
